In a word, yes, I feel safer now that we're no longer neutral in the war on terror. I don't know if you can ever be 100% safe from Terrorism in a country that is free. However, at the very least we've proven that the US will not sit idly by while terrorists and their sponsoring countries plot the murder of innocent people.
The degree to which the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have made us safer is tough to tell, because their high minded goals work on many different levels (changing ideologies, introducing freedom and democracy, getting middle east countries to cure the endemic terrorist problems rooted in their own countries). It'll probably take a few more years before the answer is clear. It'll also probably take kicking the living crap out of Iran, Syria and the Sudan.
