Actually, there is direct scriptural reference to the Rapture :-)

Anyway, all I'm trying to say is that there is a wide gap between emotional/physical bonding and a bonding of spirits which is anything more than a meeting of minds. Souls cannot be literally intertwined or meshed, as there is no scriptural precedent for it. But it's my understanding that most people don't mean this when they talk about soul ties anyway.
