Re: FIR Sauna's : Go Cheap & Nasty or Big $$$

Hey Malcom,

There is a big difference in the low end and hi end infrared saunas. I did a lot of research when we got ours, so here's my 2 cents. I have a Clearlight Far Infrared Sauna (www.clearlightsaunas.com). It's a 2 person one and it cost me around $3800. I equate sitting in the lower end ones to being a lot like a sitting in a wooden toaster oven. They just aren't the same. I don't know the one you mentioned (Smarty), but here's what I wold say about some of the others.

A few things to consider:

The type of wood - I think cedar or basswood is best. Fir and spruce are just not the same. They warp, etc. I looked at a used Airwall/Soft Heat sauna that was six months old that someone was selling the bench was warped. My Clearlight Sauna is over 2 years old and almost looks new.

The heaters - Gentle, but deep penetrating heat is what you want so you can stay in and sweat and not feel like you can't take it. The low end one feel like a piece of meat under a heating lamp. Plus the reflectors change the infrared was so it's not as pure.

Construction - If the difference in price was $10k, ok it would matter, but for $1500-2k more ot have something that will last a lifetime to me is worth it. I tried a saunagen and it smelled like glue and felt like it was going to fall apart. The Airwall/Soft Heat also seemed kind of flimsey.

My wife and I sauna almost everyday and haven't been sick in the 2 years since we got the sauna. As you can see we are big believers.
