Re: root canal

Hi,

I just read your post and I did get a root canal on Friday. I have to go get a crown tomorrow (porcelain is the most common, I believe). The crown is so that your tooth does not get infected or that the temporary filling that is put in place after your root canal does not fall out.

I was wondering what city you live in? I live in Chicago and could tell you who I went to if it interests you. Also, check with your dentist (specialist) if they accept credit cards. That way you can use your credit card and pay it back little by little. Or pay some in cash and some on credit. Just an idea. Is the dentist you mention an endodontist? They are specialized in root canals and all that stuff (that's who did mine) but the crown will get done by my regular dentist.

By the way, before my procedure and after reading all kinds of things (mostly negative) on root canals, I called my dentist and mentioned it all to her. She explained the procedure and the fact that although there could be complications, they are not very common. Once at the endodontist, I told her about my worries and anxiety as well and she explained everything in detail. She did mention that those type of freaky stories that I read about could happen if for instance the tooth is in the front of the mouth and it is infected. In that case some of the infection can seep down your throat and into your limph nodes and thus spread to your other organs or if the tooth is on the top part of your mouth and infected then the drainage from the infection can go into your nasal cavaties and thus reach your brain and cause serious complications. But she did reitorate that those are extremely rare cases and very very seldomly occur.

I'm no expert by any means but I do feel you should listen to your dentist. They went to school and deal with that stuff every single day. Plus if they think that there is going to be a serious complication or say that it is better to do one thing over the other they not only tell it to you because it is better for you but because they are also covering themselves. Remember that this country is the land of lawsuits and all doctors are very aware of that. If your dentist is certified and you trust him/her do as he/she says.

Sorry, for the long post but I hope it helped. Good Luck!!!!
