root canal

I am suppose to get a root canal this week but I have been reading up on root canals and a forum within this site and it is beginning to scare me. So far all I see is that root canals cause more problems than they resolve. It states that root canals allow bacteria to linger and possibly infect other parts of the body because the tubules are nearly 3 miles long and thus the dentist cannot get to all the canals and thus the bacteria live there. Anyhow, my question is if this is all true and if so what should I do about my tooth? If a root canal is not the best way to go what is? Any help on this subject would really help me. Thanks.
