what are the drawbacks to surgery?

Hi all.
After a terribly painful bout on Thursday night, and a trip to the ER, I was diagnosed with Gallstones after an ultrasound.
I have an appointment with a surgeon, but not until August 29...ah, our wonderful Canadian system.

Im gathering that many are opposed to the surgery and Im wondering why. Besides the usual risks for any surgery, are there some specific risks or side effects I should be concerned about?
