High ESR reading - low iron

Does anyone know why inflamation in the body means a reduced ability to absorb iron? I have had iron injections in the past, which did help, as my iron reserves were way down. Now my dr. says that I have iron in my body, but its not been converted into heamoglobin, because on inflammatory response. Also, when I have taken iron supps. in the past, the inflam. reading has shot up (like 80-100, it should be about 14. Also, anti-inflamatory meds. have this effect - any advice gratefully received!
