Re: consider physical causes too - not allways mental

Hey Kev,

Its me Gracey. Yes, there is more to anorexia than psychological and super-thin models in magazines. It is a nerve issue also. A way of coping with stress, anxiety about work or school, fears, ...many things. The Central Nervous System is connected to the Gut via the Vagus Nerve, so it effects our digestion and elimination. 5-HTP works to calm the nerves. Many anorexics bulimics I speak to, have irritable bowl syndrome, chronic gut problems too. Certaintly an unhealthy intestial tract, like Candida overgrowth, will make some people crave more sweets or junkfood. Many say they feel best when no food is in them, like your neice. Digesting food can make them exhausted!

People with ED's can cleanse, they can juice fresh veggies for nutrients, they can use more B vitamins usually. 5-HTP is a nerve relaxer (not a laxative), it is a precursor to serotonin. It is healthy for the colon and intestine. Helps to normalize elimination. Without it the body would be stressed out, and intestinal lining would contract, leaving no surface area to absorb nutrients.

If you want to offer some ideas to your neice, hypnosis cd's for de-stressing and relaxation are excellent. She will naturally release the "feel-good" molecules like serotonin that way. When the mind is relaxed, the body can digest more easily. Many very smart intellectual people get eating disorders because their mind is always racing! They are always worrying about deadlines, or thinking of something new. That is something you can tell her, that might seem kinder than what most doctors are saying.

Good luck!!

gracey
