They seemed to be true only when they're applied to someone else as is often still the case today. I find that much of today's practices in psychology and psychiatry to be highly manipulative and self serving.
Look to advertising to see this. Freud's nephew took much of Freud's findings into human nature and spun and twisted them until he was able to convince people to do things they normally wouldn't. He was the main ad man that positioned smoking as something trendy and desireable. Needless to say, many major corporations loved him and used his services on an ongoing basis. He started a trend that has more than helped make this planet for worse off.
Its also used to give labels to people not helped by our failing traditional healthcare system. Just another way to justify dealing out more drugs and capitalizing on more profits.
These are just a couple examples of the misuse of these practices, there are many more.
