In many European languages, chiles are known as “pepper from Cayenne”, e.g., Greek piperi kagien [πιπέρι καγιέν], Latvian kajēnas pipari or Portuguese pimenta de caiena. The element Cayenne in these names is a loan from a Native American Indian language: Originally spelt cayan, it goes back to a member of the Tupi language family in which the spice was termed kyinha (also spelt quiínia).
