help with foxtail removal?

My dog has gotten another foxtail and I don't want to spend another $325 for surgery. (For those of you fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with what a foxtail is, it is a dried grass seed which pierces the skin and continues to travel internally due to a barbed point that only moves in a forward direction. It can continue its journey and pierce internal organs causing severe damage or even death.)

Does anyone know of a way to non-surgically remove these dastardly little things?
