How long an eye can recover from injury?

Dear all,
I'm a 23 years old contact lens wearer, but since 8 months ago I have stop wearing contact lens due to an eye injury. Actually my left eye was hurt when a friend of mine accidently point her finger into my eye. Its so painful at the time but the pain gone in the next day. So I din't visit a doctor. In the next week I din't wear contact lens, but when I start to wear my contact lens again I found its quite painful when I remove it from my left eye. So I stop wearing it for another two weeks and try again but the result is still the same. Then I stop wearing contact lens for about one and a half months, still the result is the same. Since that i din't wear contact lens until now.
My eyesight is quite bad, and I found that by wearing contact lens my 'power' gain less frequently and I'm more confident when I'm not with my thick and heavy spec. Could any one tell me how long an eye will recover from an sight injury? In future am I still able to wear contact lens?
