He can't make up his mind.. and the Marines is taking him away

Let's just call him "J". He's playing games with my heart and it's ripping me into many pieces. We fell in love in December 2001, and it was *the* perfect relationship. Once, he even traveled 300 miles just to see me for an hour. This was probably one of the most mature relationships I've ever witnessed/expereicned. Then, he suddenly left me last August. Now my feelings have never changed, I still love him with everything I have. But he... he comes back to me every 3-4 weeks and says that he's never stopped loving me, he says that he thinks about me everyday, and every little thing reminds him of me, and we're Soulmates. Sometimes he even tells me he dreams of marrying me and we could run away together. Then a week or so later... he'll stop talking to me, and he'll seem so very distant from me. More weeks will go by, and he'll confront me with the same old "I still love you" bit. Now just a few months ago, he announced that he's joining the Marines - It's the Active Duty area, so he'll be in Japan for many years. This crushed me even more. He stopped talking to me for a month after I cried about it. He just now started talking to me again, and told me that as soon as he gets his life mellowed out (after he goes to the Marines for 4 years) he's going to track me down, and try to start a serious relationship with me again. I want to believe him sooo bad... but I don't want to wait so long, when he may not even stick to his word. Does anyone have any advice on these two situations? Any help is greatly appreciated....
