Re: I need an answer from anyone....

Monica,

Why are they doing a section? Are you that ill? Your baby has been sharing blood with you and has already been exposed to anything you might have. The best thing for baby is to breastfeed. This is the perfect food. Also, Nystatin is on the safe list for babies as it is prescribed when they have thrush.

Babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life (many are thrive even longer on only breastmilk). Breastmilk is also antimicrobial. Babies intestinal wall is open until about this time so that mother may pass all of the anitbodies and immunity to baby. Early introduction of cow's milk (formula) and/or solids puts baby at rish for allergies and I think would give the yeast a much better avenue to colonize in babies gut.

Be aware that babies born by section often must be awakened and encouraged to breastfeed. They have a little more trouble organizing and you may have to work a little to get them to latch well and they will get sleepier when your milk comes in on the 3rd or 4th day because of the meds coming out in the milk. You need to make sure you are waking baby to feed. It doesn't mean that you won't be able to do it. It is just something you should be aware of so if trouble arises you already know what to do. Newborns nurse a lot and even before the milk comes in it is their sucking is what helps bring in a good supply. Should be nursing 8-12 times a day. Don't let them talk you into formula while in the hospital. Tell them breastmilk only!!! Also, have an advocate (husband of family member) so if you are weak or baby has difficulties they can see that you are able to initiate breastfeeding as soon after the birth that is possible. And seek the help of the lactation consultant or La Leche League if you need it.

I would also suggest that you make sure you are eating a diet full of vitamins and minerals. Baby will take what he needs from you and leave you deficient which you might already be if you have candida. So if you are not well, get some help around the house so that you can concentrate on your health and taking care of baby.

Good Luck and if you have questions about breastfeeding, I am very knowledgeable, email me or post on the Pregnancy/Birth forum. I am interested about how it all goes.

Melissa
