You don't need a yogurt maker

Hi! Just thought I'd pipe in to tell you that you do not need a yogurt maker to make your own yogurt. I used to make it all the time, by the pot!

First, I'd boil the milk in a regular saucepan. This is to kill off the Antibiotics in the milk, which would prevent the yogurt culture from "taking."

Then, I had to let the milk cool. This is the one part I do not remember- you would need to do some research to find out the temperature. I recall that there was an optimum range- you didn't want the milk to be either too hot nor too cold. I used a candy thermometer.

Next, I would simply mix in a Tablespoon or two of plain yogurt.

Finally, I would place the saucepan in the oven, covered with plastic wrap, and leave it there overnight with the lightbulb burning inside. The lightbulb provided a little warmth to aid the culture.

In the morning, I had a whole pot of yogurt. I'd make all kinds of things with it- soups, drinks, dips, desserts like pie... Once the yogurt is done you do need to chill it.

OK you really do have me thinking about yogurt now, so I think tomorrow I'll make some.... Good luck, hope you enjoy it.
