Re: Califlady, Reasons for Atheism
I saw both, as I am sure you do too.
My mom belonged (currently no longer) to a cultish religious outfit. This type of situation always attracts the dregs of society. So I did see a lot of hypocrisy. Lots of con types sucking life out of others and taking advantange of people who didn't know any better in the name of god. I also remember this being a place that welcomed people who didn't fit into mainstream society. Offering acceptence and friendship. I also remember honestly good people believing that they were worshiping god and studying the bible the best way they knew how.
My Grandmother would bring me to her Luthern church when I came to visit, which was often. So, I got plenty of exposure there too. I believe church offered a gathering place for friendship for my grandma as well as a platform to do charity work. I remember her making quilts to send to other countrys and making crafts and baked goods for charity sales. I know she did this because she was a very good person and truly wanted to help others, church offered a means and a way.
I did see lots of good things happening at church, of coures lots of simply wrong things as well, which is normal for mankind. I just simply don't resinate with church and god. I do charity work and give money for earth related causes. I'm not really a "people" person. I hated to waste a day at church. I don't like getting dressed up, I don't like crouds of people, I don't like singing. Church gatherings do not bring out the best in me, I just hate that kind of thing. I would much rather go for a hike, go for a bike ride, work in my garden or go swimming or just read a book.
Hope that makes sence to you. I hope you can understand what I beleive and feel is not wrong. It is just different from what you feel and beleive.
