Well okay.
When we look to human behaviors and their beliefs, we can often look to "motivations" underlying those believes and habits.
The motivation to create a god would have been huge in our past, when we were more ignorant and had less scientific knowledge.
Explaining death and allaying fears of the many threats and the suffering under natural conditions of our past may have had a great benefit at one time to have a god-belief.
Then we turned it into social control, and obedience to doctrines, again the motivations are important - it was for POWER, authority, domination.
