The way I look at the tax issue, if a church is operating tax free, more money is needed from others to make up for it. So in essence, you are supporting these churches with your tax dollars. Yes, it is not a direct payment by you like you are putting money in the collection plate during mass, but it is the same end result - the same thing, just a few more intermediate moves with the money to seperate you from the transaction. Made possible by the government of course...
I read recently that atheists only make up 10% of the population. I guess this is why churches get tax breaks - indirectly through popular vote. I don't really believe the 10% figure is accurate. Interesting though.
