Do the math. Someone has to pay for every public service through taxation. A tax cut or tax exemption for one group is the same as levying a tax increase on everyone else. If you are an atheist, you are paying more in taxes because organized religions are declared tax exempt by our US government. (This also happens to be endorsement of religion by our government which is unconstitutional.)
How does it feel to have a piece of your paycheck going to pay for religion and churches - and at that, a service that you inherently have no use for? Do you own a business? Churches are BIG business, only they don't pay taxes. That's right - you business owners also have to compensate for religion's free ride - and you are taxed more because of it.
Finally, do you belong to a religion that is not "approved by the government"? Yup, you pay more in taxes too, and you are financially supporting another religion other than your own.

This is a reply to # 269,774I have no strong thoughts on the lack of taxation on churchs. But, god help me (pardon the pun) if my tax dollars go to any monuments with religious overtones. Like the ten comandments. oh, ick. Like I need a god to tell me to do the right thing, because I'm too cluless to figure it out for myself. Any way, just wanted to say hi. jj glad to see you sticking to your godless ness its to bad there isnt a word we could agree on so we dont even have to use the words god or jesus or christianity! These words have been so abused by the fundamentatist that they bring fear and disgust to so many I 'd like to change the wording! But thats not practical just my sentiments! G- Hiya Mr.G ff.

I'm attracted to peacefulness, that is what I aim for in my life. I do not find real peace in a church or in group of worshipers. I always feel like I'm faking something, and I have never felt like I fit in. I'm not really a "people" person. I find acting with compassion, tolarance in a mindful fasion brings me peace. Add atheism to the list of abused terms. One thing that iks me is the definition of atheism (2. Godlessness; immorality.) - the reference to immorality certainly seems biased, but I guess if you get enough religious people in the population saying it, it does become common usage and thus a definition. So, I am immoral, and yet I don't feel it lol...

Good to hear from you. I try to stay away from the religious Debate Forums - maybe I'll drop by sometime to stir things up. :)
The way I look at the tax issue, if a church is operating tax free, more money is needed from others to make up for it. So in essence, you are supporting these churches with your tax dollars. Yes, it is not a direct payment by you like you are putting money in the collection plate during mass, but it is the same end result - the same thing, just a few more intermediate moves with the money to seperate you from the transaction. Made possible by the government of course...
I read recently that atheists only make up 10% of the population. I guess this is why churches get tax breaks - indirectly through popular vote. I don't really believe the 10% figure is accurate. Interesting though.

I try not to think too much on the unfairness accompanied with all the church and god business. As for the monopoly god has on morality, well that is the biggest lie of all, morality and religion have nothing to do with each other. The Debate Forums are foolish, but when I read anything about the lack of morality and atheism, well, I have to speak up. The crimes commited in the name of god should shame churches out of exhistance.
As for the 10%, I would guess that is the precentage of people who have given the time to really examine what they think and believe in. Just look around you, or look in the religious debate fourms. Many people act nothing like the way the bible instructs. The christian forum is filled with intolarent people who speak hatefully to each other. I guess it's fine to sin all week long, only to repent on sunday. That would be a much easier way to ease ones conscience. You are right, it is interesting.
