stem cell source?

The only place I have heard of is that they get them from the umbilical cord?? It has been brought to my attention that we the patients should be saving the plenctia and the umbilical cord. But, like organ doners, money is involved so they make it hard if not impossible to obtain and we pay the hospitals eventhough they gain.
