Should I buy milk in plastic, or glass?
Hey guys. So I ordered some Kefir Grains from Donna Schwenk, trying to get into Kefir for the first time.
The only store near me is some health food store and most of the milk there is ultra pasteurized (which if I understand correctly is a big no no). I am able to get ahold of raw milk, so I'll be doing that (it's not exactly convenient as I can only get it twice a month, the delivery cost is pretty high and I don't have that many great ways to store it). Wondering how Kefir from raw milk compares to grade a pasteurized milk.
Anyway... recently I made a change to move away from consuming water in all plastics, because plastics leech chemicals into the water (the reason water has that plastic taste, the reason it has a metallic taste when it's in stainless, etc). I'm wondering what the deal is with buying milk for kefir... if buying it in glass makes a difference, or if the bacteria somehow would neutralize any chemicals from the plastic? I DO know that it's a no no to make kefir in plastic, but wondering what we feel about the milk we feed to the kefir, and what type of container that should be in.
