Is it safe to dilate the pupils?

I was recently recommended an ayurvedic eye specialist for my long standing eye problems. I went to see him and he kept me waiting for more than half an hour after calling me into his office because he was getting someone to fix one of his machines.

Then he heard me out and told me that he needs to dilate my pupils before he can suggest any treatments. I told him I cannot have that done today because I need to go back to work and type on a computer, and dilation makes the eyes unable to read for many hours. He asked me to come back on a day where I can afford to not read or drive for the following 5 hours.

Now, I do not think it is a good idea to dilate the pupils. As this website says, dilating drugs can be toxic -

Plus, I do not understand why one would do such an artificial thing as to use synthetic substances to paralyse certain eye muscles and over-activate others.

I would like to get an opinion here on this forum. Do you think this is a reasonable thing to do - to dilate the pupils?

The only reason I am still wondering about this is that this person is an eye specialist from ayurveda, and that's a rare speciality where I live, so he might actually help me in ways that others have not been able to so far.
