Clinical Significance
Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic nematode found
in tropical and subtropical regions. Because of low
larval densities in feces, stool examination is a
relatively insensitive diagnostic test; serodiagnosis
by ELISA offers increased sensitivity. Antibody titers
decrease in many patients following treatment. Patients
with latent infections who are immunosuppressed or
receiving immunosuppresssive therapy ate at risk of life
threatening hyprinfection. Significant crossreactivity
may be observed in filarial and other nematode
infections.
