12 days into appendicitis

I have appendicitis. As there is very little information available about the natural treatment of appendicitis, it was this forum that lead me to Dr Schultz and in particular Tilman's 1930s book on the subject.

Please note, before anyone posts "please go to the hospital", i have made a reasoned and informed choice not to, instead choosing to believe that the body is capable of healing itself. Every other time in my life, when an unexpected health crisis has arisen and i have broken resolve and resorted to the medical industry, i have regretted it. If a natural healing forum isn't the place to relate natural healing accounts then something is very wrong. And maybe such stories in time will serve to counteract the wide prevalence, indeed universal medical world scaremongering surrounding appendicitis.

I urge you to fully read my references. Also note that from what ive read there are different causes and manifestations of appendicitis (it tends to include a bunch of cecum related inflammatory conditions), so what follows is strictly just an account of what happened to me only, and may or may not be a suitable guide for others.

Ok, so it started 12 days ago when i awoke with sudden onset symptoms of appendicitis. It felt like what i have occasionally experienced as gas cramps/ bloating of the gut. After 48 years im pretty attuned to my digestion, and early on intuitively commenced a water fast, which meant that i got to bypass the vomiting stage. After that first sleepless night not being able to get comfortable, trying not that effectively to pass the gas, and bowel contents, the gut pain centralised to the right of the naval, then it dropped to the Burnies point just medial to the ISIS, and a mild fever started. This state continued for exactly 3 days, and only taking water on an as wanted, sip basis. They were up there with the hardest days of my life, such was the gut pain. The only way you can get semi comfortable is flat on your back with your knees up. Once the fever broke, i started reading in earnest and self diagnosed as appendicitis. At this point every single person around me without exception produced a story about a relative who nearly died, and badgered me to go to the emergency room, including my partner. This is one of the loneliest things you can experience in this world.

The initial 3 day crisis was quite scary, but after that things got much more comfortable. I could now lie still without pain, it only hurting when i moved. Elevating my right knee slightly on a pillow helped. My urine was now fluorescent orange much of the time. At this point I commenced rehydrating, taking 6-8 glasses of filtered water per day, and while having to work a bit to get it down felt good with it. My research intensified, and the following two resources in particular gave me the strength and resolve to continue to let my colon heal naturally.

Schultz: "I have three rules for appendicitis, dont go the hospital, dont go the hospital, dont go the hospital"

Tilman is a wonderful old book that every modern doctor should read, hailing from a time when the hygienists could still appreciate pre surgical intervention and healing. Tilman's treatment in a nutshell is water fast, absolute rest, and commence with juices only when the bowels move around the 19th day.

Days 4 and 5, the previous state where it was so painful to get up, reposition, or move in any way changed to one where the gut was relaxed, however the upper appendix / cecum are was still tender to the touch, and felt like a walnut to the touch during this stage. But getting up to visit the bathroom still hurt abdominally. Temp now back to 37C. Hot and cold packs alternating, with cold the more relieving.

On the fourth day, i finally bit the bullet and commenced with enemas, should probably have done it earlier, but i didnt have the gear at hand, and was in so much pain. I repeated the enema every other day, doing two lots of 2 litres each time. The second time, i finally got this great mass of live and dead parasites, and then a final flush of very orange soup that obviously originated from the stagnant vicinity of the cecum. Subsequent times were clean.

On day 6 the walnut shaped inflammation reduced to a more diffuse tenderness, then to being barely sore at all. I continued with bed rest, and even though i was now pretty comfortable and able to move about, and heartily tempted to do stuff, instead largely heeded Tilman's advice of rest. The laptop in bed, and sleeping on an off, and getting up to pee, was the extent of my days. Now also sleeping soundly at night til around 3am when id be wide awake.

Between day 6 and 10, energy levels oscillated a bit from bright to groggy. During this time i experimented on alternating days with some anti bacterial type herbal remedies mentioned here and elsewhere, garlic (blended and strained), manuka honey (one tsp diluted), thyme and sage (2tsp ea blended and strained, fresh from the garden). These all went down without any ill effect, and my only observations was that the garlic left a garlic taste in my mouth for 2 days, but i did feel pretty good after the herbs.

Unlike my optional water fasts, my energy levels were fairly constant. I had a constant grimy / sewer feel to my mouth and slight cuts in the palate, and a sore tooth. The sore tooth was a recent composite filling, and its worth noting here that i also had my last remaining Amalgam removed at that time.

Day 10 arrives, and i begun to have doubts that my condition is as serious, that maybe i dont have an abscess, and maybe it was a milder case of inflammation. Tilman outlines a process broadly as follows, the inflammation either in the appendix or the lower cecum causes a global abdominal rigidity which is painful and lasts 3 days, then an abscess forms to quarantine the blockage/damaged area, then after some time the abscess bursts safely into the cecum. (He is adamant that the appendix will only burst into the peritoneum if one or more of the following misinterventions occur: morphine is given for pain (interferes with the abdominal rigidity required to protect the inflamed area); excessive manual palpitation / examination (literally bursts the abcess from the outside), and continued food intake (forms gas and restarts peristalsis putting pressure on the abscess from the inside).

But ive also reached my limit of 10 days which is the longest ive ever fasted, and thus now into uncharted terrain. (I usually do a ten day 'master cleanse' every 2 years or so). My work and family responsibilities are starting to press. But in actual fact not only are people pretty patient, i generally take the whole opportunity to savour what appears to be a healing crisis for me, both physically and emotionally/spiritually.

However, influenced by Schultz who advocates juices, i said to myself that at day 10 i would try starting on finely strained juices. Which i did starting with apple Celery and parsley, blended then triple sieved. The one glass went down ok, but within an hour produced a lot of gas, possibly caused by the sweetness of the apple. So the next day i tried cucumber and Celery (all of which we had in the garden). Finally i tried a home made broth of beef bones, celery, beetroot, beet tops and onion, all organic all grown within 200m of here. Just one sip of that gave me a stomach ache, within seconds.

So in the end i gave up on the liquids, because i just couldnt get them down. My appetite throughout has been non-existent, and even looking at food, smelling it, i was just no, no thanks. I even ended up cooking a couple of meals for my partner, who coincidentally or otherwise was taking this all as an opportunity to have a melt down, turning the house into a bombsite, and living on coffee, and crackers and cheese. It was pretty clear that if the smell of home cooked dinner, couldnt arouse me then i was still unwell, and indeed would be in for the full 3 week shebang. Today is day 12, and according to Tilman there could be another 7 days...

I will update this when this resolves (so if you dont hear from me, youll know that nature had other plans! Joke. Gotta laugh!) Tilman says that when the abscess bursts you get a BM of blood and pus, so i guess thats what im waiting for.

One or two points by way of background. The dinner meal immediately prior to this contained sweetcorn, lamb, and a cabbage and red onion coleslaw (all home grown), with homemade mayonaise (organic flaxseed oil, organic egg yolk, non organic supermarket lemon and mustard). Both of us had some bloating from that cabbage, and it may well have been a contributing factor, esp. when combined with the parasite load that was evident. I know raw cabbage is hard to digest, but we try to eat local, and cabbage just grows really well here.

Also in the week or two prior, my partner had been struggling with work and life, and this sometimes gets me down, making me prone to leaning on food, grazing and nibbling, although relatively healthy food items, this doesnt allow my digestive tract to rest. Apples in particular are a weakness. The fingerfood thing, and living on a farm, has historically made me somewhat susceptible to pin worms, of which ive had 3 doses in the last 15 years (resorting to Vermox each time)(not knowing that there were effective herbals for this, now ordered thanks).

Also more generally in the months prior i have been attempting to increase the raw percent in our diets (from about half to 2/3), and greens in particular, adopting daily lunch salads, and breakfast green smoothies. This, in addition to adding several kinds of seaweed (PDCMs), have allowed me to start to manage a few niggling symptoms, mild prostate discomfort, hip impingement spurs, recurring ear wax etc. Also have taken up more social and physical pursuits, and am fitter than ever.

So i guess you dont have to be a std american diet/SAD person to get appendicitis. And... at 19 days worth of recovery time from this, you can sorta see why modern "gotta go" man opts for surgery.
