I think it is strongly possible that HSV / some other type of virus is the cause of EC.

HSV / other viruses may manifest themselves differently for different people.

I know that my mother gets cold sores, which means the possibility that I got HSV from her is very high, yet I have never had a cold sore lesion.

This leads me to believe that HSV may be a possible culprit.
