Re: Has anyone here ever heard of psyllium husk aggravating bowel, best psyllium brand?

Nice find, ActicJellyBean :)

The theory on psyllium husk is that it feeds butyrate-producing gut flora, and in that way trigger the gut lining to tighten up, lower inflammation and generate proper TH-cytokines.

An increase in butyrate could potentially cause sudden dieoff of the gut flora that have been lining and damaging the intestinal tract.

'Candida'/biofilm dieoff does release inflammatory and toxic materials.

Butyrate does induce the dieoff of the fungal (hyphal) forms of biofilmic gut flora. It is one of the metabolic by-products of the gut flora that compete directly with candida for food.

The calcium Bentonite is meant to help by absorbing the die-off toxins..
In a person with low magnesium in the body, the Bentonite may trigger poor responses to the the drink though. Magnesium (and in concert with it, potassium and sodium) governs the flow of liquid through the gut wall. Liquids are essential to the P&B cleanse, so electrolyte status goes hand in hand with it.

In the condition of IBS/IBD, there have been very good reports of using butyrate: http://thehomeschoolingdoctor.com/butyrate-series/
A doctor in California blogged about it after finding it was the one way to help her chronic and painful constipation.
