Re: What are healthy iron levels?

Are you female or a male?

Your iron is not 11.4, your hemoglobin is 11.4.

Normal iron values is 50-170 ug/dL

Also when iron tests are order they normally include total iron binding capacity and % saturation of transferring (protein that carries iron in the blood).

Normal values for TIBC is 240-450 ug/dL
Normal value for % saturation is 13-50%
Ferritin is also looked at: 20-300 ng/mL

With that said, iron deficiency would result in microcytic anemia, meaning that the size of your red blood cells would be decreased. Your hemoglobin concentration inside RBC would also be decreased and your hemoglobin size would be decreased, hence the term "microcytic"..this is because iron is required to make hemoglobin and as a result of a deficiency things end up being smaller.

Anyways, look at your MCV, MCH, MCHC and if they are all under normal values then your probably iron deficient.
