Has anyone else induced hyperthyroidism with iodine or selenium?

History: My family has a history of thyroid-related illness. My test results several years ago revealed hypothyroidism. After reading Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It, I decided to treat myself naturally and started a protocol of Iodine, selenium, coconout oil, acv, b-12, gluten-free eating, and salting. The results were immediate and I felt better in days than I had before in my life. I went through a heavy detox period initially but the salt and hydration helped. Cysts in my breasts disappeared, my energy levels soared, my stomach problems cleared up, sleep and digestion improved, and immunity was perfect—I didn’t get so much as a cold or allergies for two years and I usually was an annual sufferer. I experimented with dosages after the initial period of about 3 months and found that my maintenance dose was 200mcg selenium, and two drops of %5 lugol’s twice a day.

About a year later, I began to experience hyperthyroid symptoms (heart palpatations, vitiligo, brittle hair and nails). I went to be tested and found that I had what the endo called sub-clinical hyperthyroidism and he said I should stop my iodine supplementation. 6 months later my hyper symptoms had completely disappeared, but my T3 levels were through the roof while all other levels remained within a normal range. I tried to then add iodine or selenium in (both individually and together) and found that a single dose of either would send my thyroid hyper for several days, but my symptoms were significantly worse when I took selenium. My endocrinologist tested me for Graves and Hashimoto’s antibodies to rule those out and I tested negative for both. After a year off of the lugol’s iodine and selenium, my hypo symptoms have returned—fatigue, mental fog, cysts among others. But a single dose of selenium and lugols both still send my thyroid into a hyper spin. I recently decided to order and try nascent iodine as I heard people are less reactive to it. I have been on it a week and have responded well—my cysts are disappearing, my energy has returned. However, I have always heard it is a mistake to take iodine without selenium as the thyroid needs it to convert iodine. I took a single dose of selenium with my nascent iodine this week and experienced hyper symptoms for the next 12 hours—I even developed vitiligo spots by the next morning. Has anyone else experience anything like this? I am nervous about taking iodine long term without selenium. Is selenium am unnecessary supplement if nascent iodine does not need to be converted by the thyroid like lugol’s? Could I have oversaturated my thyroid with selenium? My Endo is baffled and I am trying to strike the right balance.
