I had the mirena put in after my dr recommended it because of my age, she said to ignore comments of how bad it is because these are just designed to scare people and everyone is different... WELL.. After 4 mths it settled and I thought all was ok, then one day I woke up with a numb left foot and as the day progressed the pain in my lower back developed and my left hand also had a tingling sensation. By day 3 I could barely put one foot in front of the other. I went to a physio, a chiro, had a xray, a MRI scan, a ultrasound and even ended up in hospital .. I have to say I have a pretty high pain threshold so this was drastic but I knew something was severely wrong. No dr could find anything wrong with me. After 4 weeks of severe pain the worst thing happened... I sneezed! It felt like something inside me exploded and my entire left side was in excruciating pain.. I couldn't sit or walk and just lay in one spot crying in agony. In my bedridden state I began googling my symptoms And I came across this forum, the pain I couldn't describe was being experienced by so many ladies. I went back to the hospital and begged them to take the mirena out, however not one dr would acknowledge that this was my problem and sent me for further irrelevant tests which all came back clear, they then diagnosed me with sciatica. I ended up discharging myself and booked in at my local gp to have it removed ... It's been a couple of days now and I'm slowly starting to feel a little better. I have am finally been able to go back to work and can drive again (sitting was something I just couldn't do), however it's early days so I will keep u updated on my progress.
I know not all woman suffer side effects of the mirena but after my experience I would never recommend it and believe it has not been properly tested, the fact the drs do not seem to acknowledge that it can cause these kind of problems is terribly concerning.
