We hear from more than a few like you in the detox groups. Eventually you might investigate that angle. You might have picked up something in your military service that due to your genetic or other factors you don't get rid of at a normal rate.
In the short term you could learn more about adrenals and thyroid.
Thyroid hormones are made from tyrosine, Iodine ( I avoid megadoses) with the help of other minerals including selenium. (Se binds with heavy metals so your body might be low in bioavailable Se)
Tyrosine is interesting in light of your use of speed. Speed helps catecholamine neurotransmitters (Cats) to hang around longer (oversimplification). The body makes the Cats from tyrosine with help from iron, Bs, C, etc.
I have a history of ADD with former need for Rx speed; however, now after 2 yrs of detox (cutler protocol) my doctor suggested that I no longer needed the speed. I'm still using a pile of supplements.
The rule of thumb in the Yahoo detox groups is to support adrenals before ramping up metabolism with thyroid and mito support. You don't want those to produce extra stress on already struggling adrenals.
According to Cutler and countless reports in the detox groups most people have trouble making enough steroid adrenal hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, progesterone, and the sex hormones. You can see them here. (DHEA is not abbreviated) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Steroidogenesis.svg
I don't have time to go into it but if you don't have $ for a natural or functional medicine doctor, you could get your cortisol and pregnenolone tested, hopefully with the help of some medical pro.
Notice that pregnenolone is the precursor to progesterone. Testing the latter is a crap shoot with your irregular cycles. It varies greatly during the "month". If you don't knwo where you are, you might be better off testing pregnenolone. Also preg is an inexpensive supplement. Don't expect your doctor to mention it since the doc doesn't make $ from it but you could get him in trouble from abuse of it!!! You can get tests at directlabs, etc.
