As for the TDS meter and heated water. The issue is where heating your water reduces oxygen and raises conductivity. Which in turn throws off meter readings.
Though it's not all bad, as I've discovered that CS solutions made under heat tend to be much more resistant to oxidation than room temp ones. Which is a good thing imo. And so it's well worth the added work to make it imo.
As for making your own using coins and batteries, I'd say go for it! You can't beat the hands on method imo. Especially if you have the means to control it. Though I'd urge you to consider adding a few current limiting diodes in your circuit. This way, you will have peace of mind with regards to particle size etc.
