All what you are saying is so true. The hardest thing is to think of the animal first. Not looking for miracles but keep the animal comfortable. We have gone through it, after our first dog died after 12 years we knew we always wanted a dog.
We decided to get an older rescue dog to give it a good home. He was 7 years old and we knew that in probably 5 years we had to go through it again. It happened again in September. Of course it was difficult again, but we used pain medication to keep him comfortable. One day he could
not walk anymore and we knew this was the time. He was still wagging his tail when he went to the vet, I had given him an extra pain pill to take the stress off. He was still so alert but the cancer had taken over. Of course we cried.
You never forget these last moments and I have tears again.
The next day we went to the rescue and this time we got an
8 year old dog. My husband wanted a younger dog, but since
we are getting older we (or mainly me) needed a quieter dog.
He had said the last time he wanted an older dog since they are hard to place. So I reminded him of that and he agreed.
Our new dog is like a dream dog, we are so happy with her.
I have her on good food and supplements, but I find I worry
more about her because I hope she will stay healthy. I hope I get over this and mainly think of that she has a happy home. She was found on the street so she is lucky that she is not in a kennel or put to sleep.
