In my research on sodium Iodide transporter I came across this article on Iodine up at researchgate dot net:

ABSTRACT The authors have hypothesized that iodine-deficiency (I-def) or in some cases iodine-excess (I-excess) is associated with the development of gastric cancer.

The three papers under that heading are way over my head but maybe someone else can break it down.
