Re: Iodine long-term

So why am I reading in some places of people who have been supplementing high doses of Iodine for 12 months or more and then suddenly getting swollen thyroids or horrible rashes or Hashimotos when previously they had no such symptoms?

grizz pretty much nailed it. I noticed this trend myself and chimed in on many of the recent cases where people started having issues and asked specifically about their selenium intake. In pretty much every case I queried, the individual was not taking any additional selenium or only the selenium in their multivitamin.
There are plenty of studies that show one without the other is a recipie for problems. Iodine is a base component of the thyroid hormones BUT selenium is required to create the enzyme responsible for the hormone creation/conversion.
Taking iodone without ample selenium (and other cofactors) is like trying to bake a cake with half the flour called for on the recipie.
selenium deficiency is as rampant as iodine deficiency, which technically speaking are just the tip of the iceburg since most people are deficient in a whole slew of nutrients but generally start with ones most commonly recommended for their ailment.
My personal opinion is that if you are just looking at iodine and its recommended cosupplements alone you are doing yourself a great disservice. You should really look closely at all the elements required for life and shore up where needed. This is a complex process because it goes way beyond simple nutritional needs.
To illustrate what I mean by that is lets look at vitamin C, often recommended as a co supplement at 2000mg or more daily. Im betting most simply take the 2g and call it a day however vitamin C is not only crucial for collagen synthesis but for detoxification and as an electron donor to the immune system.
Having a mouth full of amalgum fillings and root canals can easily cause enough toxic exposure to consume over 50grams of vitamin C per day so if your only taking in 2 grams you havent even overcome the toxic load and your still in a deficient state.
