Re: irregular period

Hello!
I have a dear friend who is having menstrual problems.,
She is turning seventeen, and she has an absence of periods at 6 month intervals- she has prior to these few cycles, intense and painful cramping, and a large blood flow.
She has 'normal' blood test results, had an MRI to check her ovaries and they appear normal.

The gynecologist tells her its normal and that if she really wants they can set her on the pill.
She was really scared at first but as time passed she got fed up with waiting and simply lost her concern.

Though this isn't uncommon, isn't a late or an abnormal start to this sensitive cycle a concern? Doesn't a rough start usually indicate a sign of weakness and inner struggle?
Any information or references to great sources would be HIGHLY appreciated.
