Folliculitis (Decalvans)

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to write to you and hopefully offer all of you who are suffering from these various forms of folliculitis and other scalp ailments some light at the end of the tunnel, because it is there, somewhere.

Almost 6 years ago my dermatologist diagnosed me with folliculitis decalvans, a considerably aggressive (primarily) scalp ailment with no known lasting cure. She's considered one of the top scalp specialists in the country, but even she admitted that the dermatological community is baffled by this condition. I was subsequently put on a regimen of doxycycline (along with courses of other, even more potent Antibiotics ) which lasted for 5 and a half years! Firstly, in my opinion (I'm no doctor), no creature known to man is meant to be on Antibiotics for that period of time, it just wreaks havoc on every facet of the body.

Secondly, what I've come to realize is that this condition CANNOT be cured by western physicians or through a western "medical" approach. If you think of it logically, the skin (and particularly the scalp, which is known to be one of the most sensitive epidermal regions) is a vital organ, and is the body's last form of defense. When the body is compromised in various ways, it issues "cries of help", so to speak, that are often exhibited through the skin. It's my belief after this long struggle that folliculitis is a clear example of that.

Chinese traditional doctors have a saying: in Western medicine, if the head hurts, you treat the head. In Eastern medicine, if the head hurts, treat the foot. What this means is that the numerous parts of the body are intricately connected to each other. Thus, certain areas of the body can exhibit certain symptoms, but the source of the problem could be in a region of the body that's totally and seemingly disconnected from the problem spot.

Dermatologists can only say that bacteria related to S. Aureus is present and that "tufting" occurs in single follicles, but they're dumbfounded when it comes to the exact catalysts behind the condition itself. This is simply because these are BYPRODUCTS of a much more complex problem related to the condition of the body itself but not necessarily associated with the scalp. It could be a range of anything, but Antibiotics will only suppress the symptoms, and they will gradually lose their effectiveness. Simultaneously, through prolonged use, their future effectiveness (when actually required) will be compromised. The root of the ailment will never be addressed nor will the condition be healed.

I can wholeheartedly recommend at least taking time to visit a homeopathic doctor and nutritionist. I've had considerable success only a month after having visited a homeopathic doctor in the U.S., and I think it's an issue best addressed through a traditional, "Eastern" approach. Please try, and if you're still somewhat trepidatious or reluctant about giving up on Western medicine (i.e. antibiotics, etc.), try discussing a combinative approach with your doctor.

I really feel for all of you who are going through this exhausting and frustrating situation, especially after witnessing some of the horror stories from various other posters on this site. I can tell you, you don't have to give up, and this doesn't have to be a chronic situation. In my opinion, it's as "curable" as any ailment or condition can be. I truly believe you can benefit in some way through this approach.
