Google news search for valley fever (another systemic fungus). Chronic cases are incurable.

HIV/AIDS activism e.g. ACT UP would have gone nowhere if people widely believed in 1990 the disease was curable and nothing to worry about. Because they emphasised the severe incurable nature of AIDS there are today lots of good drugs and even some actual cures reported.
