Re: Tips on fasting while working/at school? (did a 30 day fast early this year)

PG,

Even though you broke your fast by not eating the best foods, that does not mean you "lost" the benefits of the fast. Whatever the body got rid of during the fast is gone, but you can introduce new toxins which will recreate the conditions that were alleviated. The body does/can continue to heal even after the fast and that is why re-feeding is so important. Some symptoms may return because the body had not finished healing a particular condition and the post fast diet did not facilitate continued healing.

There is nothing wrong with doing another fast but I am concerned that you may develop an unhealthy pattern of eating poorly then fasting, which will not be good for your health. You broke the first fast improperly? What will stop you from breaking the second fast improperly? Then you will feel guilty and want to fast again and before long you may develop an eating disorder. Fasting should not be used to undo the effects of continual bad eating habits.

If you are determined to change your eating habits for the better, then I don't see anything wrong with fasting again. Especially since you don't feel like eating. Also, just because you gained weight does not mean you are well nourished. Even an obese person can be low on micro-nutrients. The body needs more than fat and electrolytes to repair itself on a fast. The fat is used for fuel but micro-nutrients are needed for repair and maintenance. That's why even a very obese person cannot fast definitely; they run out of nutrients even though they still have lots of fuel.

Skin problems can be tricky. I myself have found that short frequent fasts are better for skin problems than long ones. Maybe that is because, in the early stages of a fast, the body uses more protein and the skin is one source of this protein. After a few days, when full ketosis is achieved, the fast becomes protein sparing and less protein is needed. Shorter fasts are also easier to fit into a busy lifestyle. Alternating seven days fasting with seven days eating gave me better results with my skin problems than long fasts.

If you feel that you can handle the fast, go ahead and try it. Just remember that if you keep eating the foods that are causing problems for you, fasting is a waste of time.
