The early twentieth century Syndicalist, Georges Sorell, suggested that a godless religion of the State could be created by combining democracy and tyranny. Both FDR and Stalin used this approach. What makes this approach work, is the tension between the rights quaranteed by the constitution and how government worked in practice. The individual could only accept both simultaniously by regressing into the magical world of an infant. As Philo Judeus pointed out, the individual has direct experience of the spiritual at either the level of the adult or of the infant but not at the level of the child, where most people reside most of the time. Thus, the tension gives the individual a spiritual experience. This often results in their developing an irrational faith in the State and its leaders. --- This process was also discussed by Carl Jung in one of his Tavistock Lectures. --- I fear that a godless religion of the State is something that may soon occur again.
