Apply the vaseline ontop of the crusts. it will soften them and cause them to come off eventually without trauma.

And just apply the Vaseline as much as necessary. It keeps your lips moist for awhile so you may only need to apply it 2-3 times a day. I just apply it so that my lips are constantly moist.
