I believe you could use a humidifier, viruses have problems in the moist air. Don't know what you could have stirred up by turning on the heat. Viruses can lay latent, multiplying covertly before launching an assault. On a related note, someone once posted a TED video about bacterial communication. They are quite chatty about getting roll call data and figuring out what else is around them.
