I`d say it is both. At some point the psyche and physics meet. In the future I am sure we will have appliances that can measure the chakra wheel`s energy, or vibration.

If your religion says to not meditate, I`d question it thoroughly. It is the best way to turn inwards, still your mind so your spirit work in tune with your body, and other spirit / bodies as well.
