I will have to agree with your thought on the demonic art of legalese entering the church. Churches have shown weakness in character in not standing up and rejecting such interference and accepting the supposed perks. The government of the church is now compromised and in time, the moral values which the church government votes on will be compromised as well. Just like everything else in this world.

Christians however are only bound by the promises they made to God and not the church government, for the church government in general has been unfaithful....too meek and trusting to observe those that have worldly power over them....or should I say how foolish in protecting the sheep.

Matthew 10:16“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.

23“But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes

God does have the highest authority over this world but it is in the hands of satan and his unbelievers who follow him because of the fallen nature of man.
