How do you get mercury out of streams, lakes?

Every stream and lake in Missouri, a hyper-conservation-oriented state, is contaminated with some level of mercury. How do you get this stuff out? Can some kind of crystal/resin like you use with water softeners be lowered into the water and will it grab mercury specifically or can it be engineered to do so? God help us...
