My Mother had a bit of a stroke, and her swallow was weak so they gave her a temporary PEG tube. Yes, it is to by pass the esophagus to eliminate the chance of aspiration.
Fledging, there were lots of complications with this, she was fine waiting to do another throat test in a couple of days.....the stomach tube was the beginning of the issues that eventually led to her death.
I would recommend doing voice and throat excercises to strenghen your swallow over getting a PEG tube, unless absolutely necessary for nutrition.
The add to the original question, that is how she took medicine also, crushed in water, put in the tube, and flushed with water. Herbs would be no different.
