duck years
Anyone have a clue how you measure duck years against Human years? Most say a dog year is like 7 human years. So I guess my dog is 63. We had allot of ducks at one time and the coyotes ate them one by one until one was left. he was born here and the wife and kids named him Oreo, I have always called him quakers, well I have always called all the ducks Quackers.
Quakers has been single all his life, at least 5-6 years now. He can fly about a 1/2 mile I suppose and that is how he has survived living on the ice in the winter. he won't use a shelter or even straw, nothing that would stop him from a quick get away latye at night when the coyotes try to sneak up. Not even an experinced cat has been able to survive the coyotes, they eat them all in the dead of winter when the ice is on the snow and they can't dig up the mice that they live on.
Well this winter my Mom had 2 mallard ducks that someone had gave her to raise and this fall a coyote got one, so she brought the female survivor over and Quackers was in Love at first sight and protected her from everyone. Then the ice comes and this female can fly south if she wished to, but has grown too use to corn I guess, but waite till the mallards fly North next Spring and I am sure the drakes will try to force her off with them, Quackers will have to learn how to battle if he wants to keep her.
I have a drain pipe from an upper pond coming under ground to a bottom pond and this water keeps an open spot and the 2 ducks were staying there. Then one day hunger made them fly up to the house and I put a garden hose in the pond and opened up a spot and then put an aquarium hose in the spot and that keeps water open all winter. The female duck then stayed there, easy to feed her and she wants fed daily. Quackers dissapeared, I told everyone that the coyotes must have came and he sacrificed himself in order to ave his girl friends life, cause surely he would never ever give her up, he had been too lonely all his life to do such a thing!
The 4-5 days later I noticed him at the bottom pond! He had returned to where the water is just a little warmer and he gets the South Sum every morning. Food did not seem to be a problem, I went down and fed him some dry dog food and he ate it, but he refused to come, his joice was the warmer spot and if that meant being all alone, he was prepared to be separte of his new girlfriend.
The Duck Lesson.
QUACKERS is a survivor! He is KING of his ponds, even all the Candadian Geese see him as the owner or the gaurdiean of the ponds year after year! He is frendly to every type of water fowel that stops over and the strangest thing is that the Bald Eagles that come and fish and pick birds off the bird boxes, have left Quackers alone, they all respect him and the Lone KING.
How could Quackers stand to live separate of the Love of his life, SURVIVAL, he OBEYS NATURE and NATURE HAS SERVED HIM WELL, he seen every family member eaten before his eyes, he knows Nature first hand and his girlfriend is less than a year old and is scared and seeks her shelter and food from being close to the house.
They both play in the water and it has been less than 10 degrees the past week and zero tonight. Nothing but ice ansd snow for two puny ducts that hardly weigh anything and Quackers survives on snow and water and what else??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
If your with this forum, you know, he survives on the SOUTH SUNSHINE, he is a breathairian duck who thrives on ice. He has one favorite spot, you can always find him on the bottom pond that gets the most sun and when he is out of the water, he is sun bathing ALWAYS. He always looks like Eagal bait while sun bathing, but all of Nature has mercy on him, even my German Shepard has allowed him to come up around the buildings in the dead of winter when the snow is deep and he has not eaten for a month or more, this dog has allowed Quackers to take a few morsals of her dog food out of her dish! This is from a dog that will kill a cat or duck for just getting within biting range, but when it means life or death for Quackers, even the Loner Dog has mercy.
Dog has not ate any food for a month now, she does this every fall after deer season. She scouts the woods and burries all the deer guts and feeds on them for a month or 2, she is always covered in dirt where she rolls on the rotten guts mixed with dirt.
There are hundreds of coyotes in the woods, but she does not fear them, even though many are dog mixed and HUGE. These same coyotes can kill a coon dog by attacking and stretching him to death, but a fearless german shepard can become a coyote killer and be feared by all. My first German Shepard would sneak off and kill coyote puppies all night and pile the puppies up in front of your door so you would trip over them on your way out the door to work in the morning. When a coyote would yip, she would take off like a bullet to the woods and you would here her attach the whole pack and send them flying.
Nature is an Experince for all who live with it, we humans mostly live against nature and have lost the insticts to survive that Quackers and 1/4 breed of this and that has been able to master and live in weather that would kill me in less than an hour and he probably does not weigh more than 3-4 pounds! ZERO FAT and guess what, he has never ate a dead cow or dead pig and yet lives a hardy healthy life, something 90% of the humans will swear is impossible!
Quackers the Sun Loving duck! Come Spring he will be overwhelmed with Love and loose his senses. I had a peacock that did this. He was smart until he fail in love with a goose! He slept high in the tress every night, nothing could harm him and then she came!. He followed her every where and peacocks sleep with their head under their wing, perfect coyote bait and 3 days of love by the pond's edge all night and the peacock was feathers, easy pickins! Normally a hunter has the most success during mating seasons, when the biggest and smartest wild animals become stupid and allow them selves to be seen.
Nature has many lessons to be learned and watching the animals survive is good for the children to see and experince.
Blessings,
