Re: God's Saving Grace
The difference is understanding Spurgeons other teachings in regards to this. I firmly believe Spurgeon would agree with the article I presented at the end of my last post. So taking his teaching you posted in light of the other teaching I posted prior, you see the complete picture of what he is saying. Do what Spurgeon is saying, because our faith is growing via the work of the spirit.
I just do not buy the authors skewed definitions in the article
Salvation Cannot Be by Works and God's Grace
“NOT BY WORKS of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5).
This Bible verse makes it plain and simple that good works will not save anyone. Listen to the message of Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast.” How many Scriptures does God need to put in front of our face before we get the idea—salvation is not by merit.
“Knowing that a man is NOT JUSTIFIED BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and NOT BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW: for BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW SHALL NO FLESH BE JUSTIFIED” (Galatians 2:16).
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions!!! The plain teaching of the Inspired Word of God is that salvation is NOT BY WORKS. You just read the Scriptures for yourself, and not some mans redefinition who agrees with acknowledged heretics like Servetus. The model of the socinian is to challenge the known accepted doctrinal concepts and redefine them to change the accepted normal understanding of the belief.
Socianism is the mirror movement to the post modernist era we live. Redefine what marriage is so homosexuality can be accepted. Do not call Adultery what it is. Whitewash it with simpler less damning terms like "affair"
The concepts that were taught during the reformation were not new. They can be traced back to the apostolic fathers of the early church. The reformation was about turning back to these concepts. Luther when he nailed his 95 Theses to the Castle Church in Wittenberg did not want to destroy the church. Just return them back to Augustinian concepts of grace.
Modern churches have turned so far from these teachings it is scary.
I am hearing rumors that lakewood church will be letting Oprah speak from the pulpit this Sunday. This church reaches more bodies in seats and televised than any other cough cough Christian Church. It just shows how far the church has slipped if this rumor comes to fruition.
