As a recap-
I went back to my dentist within days of posting this.

It seems I was being a bit too careful with the extraction site and a little food had gotten packed in.

I had been so afraid of a dry socket I was not touching the area enough to keep it clean- He cleaned it out and that did take care of the smell and after that I used a a little syringe they me to irrigate the area out with warm salt water several times a day. I did not have a problem after that!
