Re: hyperthyroidism and pregnancy

I was in your exact situation. I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid about 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant. I was on PTU for my entire pregnancy. I kept regular appointments with my endocrinologist, had monthly blood tests and had the dose altered when needed throughout the pregnancy and gave birth within a day of my due date to a beautiful and very healthy 8-pound girl. My daughter is now 9 months old and she is happy, healthy and so smart! As long as you take the PTU regularly to make sure your levels are normal, you should have no complications at all from this. I was very worried about the PTU, but it is perfectly safe to take during pregnancy and being hyperthyroid is much more dangerous to your baby. So just keep on top of it, make sure your levels remain stable throughout, get the monthly blood tests and you should be great. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
