Re: Soy,chickens/ ants and GMO

When I bought my new chickens.. I could not figure out why they were saying chickens get a disease that affects their legs.. Never heard of this and I am a Ranchers daughter.

What disease specifically?  I have heard of this happening with single grain diets due to amino acid deficiencies.  Maybe that is what really happened.

well, soy blocks the obsorbtion of vit d and I can prove that by my self.. I was drinking a soy protein drink.. and after a year.. the doctor suddenly said. I needed to take more Vit D and I said, but I am taking loads of it now.. she said, your body is not absorbing it.. and then sense I have an eye Disease Called Fuchs.. my eys went down hill like a sinking ship...

Fuch's corneal dystrophy is a genetic disorder, not a nutritional disorder.

came off all soy products and my eyes that are not suppose to get better did .. they say they can't explain it. and now my obsorbtion of vit D is fine also.

First of all there are over 20 forms of vitamin D.  The main ones we are interested in though are vitamin D2, inactive D3 and active D3.  What we get from plants and most foods is inactive D2.  What we get in supplements is inactive D3.

As for absorption, soy contains lecithin that aids in the absorption of vitamin D by acting as an emulsifier for this fat soluble vitamin.

Also was told my thyroid was going on the down hill.. and never had the problem before either... These things are on the health hazards of soy list that I had never known about. and yes, my husband had the same problems .. so it was not just me.

This is  another common soy myth.  Yes, it is goitrogenic as technically are all plants since it is the phytoestrogens found in all food plants that cause the goitrogenic effect.  But cooking, as is done with soy milk, or fermentation destroys the goitrogenic effect of the soybeans.  And any goitrogenic effect of plants have been shown to countered by iodine.

If you want to worry about goitrogenic effects of plants then the worst culprits are flax seed, and raw cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

Stress, such as worrying over all the false propaganda about soy, can also suppress thyroid function.   In fact there are numerous causes of hypothyroidism, several being stress related.

I feel if you eat soy.. which is hard to stay away from sense it in our meats and ect.. but if you do not watch the amounts you eat .. you will pay the piper sooner or later.

Speaking of meats, are you aware that all the hormones in meats can suppress the thyroid as well?  And contribute to inflammatory conditions such as thyroiditis?

I really think that this is why so many of you have gastro intestinal problems with the Candidas.. from all the toxins poured onto our foods.

The gastrointestinal problems come from a lack of flora.  This in turn leads to an alkaline environment that turns on the Candida growth gene and converts the Candida in to its fungal form.  In its fungal form the Candida forms finger-like projections called hyphae that allow the Candida to dig in to the tissues causing damage.

Soy contains fiber and saponins that both help to improve the growth of the flora.  This in turn can help prevent Candida damage.

But they have known sense the 1940's that soy was not good for human consumption..

Soy is not dangerous.  There is a lot of false propaganda not backed by any evidence.  But this does not make the claims true.  Try looking at studies instead of propaganda sites.  For example, this one:

Insights Gained from 20 Years of Soy Research

Soyfoods have long been recognized for their high-protein and low-saturated fat content, but over the past 20 y an impressive amount of soy-related research has evaluated the role of these foods in reducing chronic disease risk. Much of this research has been undertaken because the soybean is essentially a unique dietary source of isoflavones, a group of chemicals classified as phytoestrogens. The estrogen-like properties of isoflavones have also raised concern, however, that soyfoods might exert adverse effects in some individuals. There is intriguing animal and epidemiologic evidence indicating that modest amounts of soy consumed during childhood and/or adolescence reduces breast cancer risk. Evidence also suggests that soy reduces prostate cancer risk and inhibits prostate tumor metastasis, but additional clinical support for the chemopreventive effects of soyfoods is needed. Soy protein is modestly hypocholesterolemic and there is suggestive epidemiologic evidence that soyfoods lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) independent of effects on cholesterol. In clinical studies, soy favorably affects multiple CHD risk factors; however, with the exception of improved endothelial function, the data are too limited and/or inconsistent to allow definitive conclusions to be made. In regard to bone health, although recent clinical data have not supported the skeletal benefits of isoflavones, 2 large prospective epidemiologic studies found soy intake is associated with marked reductions in fracture risk. Soybean isoflavones also modestly alleviate hot flashes in menopausal women. Finally, other than allergic reactions, there is almost no credible evidence to suggest traditional soyfoods exert clinically relevant adverse effects in healthy individuals when consumed in amounts consistent with Asian intake."

a neighbor was also raised on soy milk.. she had to have a complete jaw replacement by the time she was 20 years old and her body is a mess. How the guy in the post above did not have any effects that he knows of is in question..

Simple, because study after study has shown that soy increases bone density such as these:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18063230

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20199985

http://jcem.endojournals.org/content/88/3/1048

http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/165/16/1890

There are many more.

Also keep in mind that despite the widespread use of soy jaw deterioration is rare and is almost always from infection or the use of bisphosphonate (osteoporosis) drugs.  This is why people need to rely on studies showing cause and effect rather than speculation that something may have caused a problem such as the jaw deterioration.

maybe he had foods that detoxed his body better then other people eat. Or maybe he is one of those agents of the soy producers that visit blogs to make sure people are kept in the dark and confused about what is happening.. hmmmm .. you never know do you?

More likely you have gotten all your misinformation from anti-soy propaganda sites rather than from credible sites.  Despite all the soy I have consumed in my life I have not suffered from any of the bogus diseases or disorders the anti-soy propaganda sites have attributed to soy.  Neither has anyone else I know of that consumes soy.  This is because soy is not as toxic or harmful as the anti-soy propaganda sites have made it out to be.  These soy myths have primarily been started by sites funded by the beef and dairy industries, such as the Weston Price Foundation.   But notice that they NEVER provide any credible scientific evidence to back their claims.  Why?  Because they are making the claims up.  And they know that people will spread the misinformation without bothering to look up if the claims are real or not because it is human nature to focus on the negative of things more than the positive.  Why do people rush to see a fight, or slow down to look at and photograph wrecks or dead bodies?  Why do people go to car races?  To watch the cars go round and round and round..........  No, they want to see the crashes.  How many people watch news casts that are 25 minutes of doom and gloom and a single short story of something pleasant?  Again, it is human nature to focus on the negative.  So when anti-soy propaganda is put out there people have their idol and they praise it even though it is a false idol.  And they do not research the claims because they do not want to know the truth since they have what they think they need.  Again it is like all the false propaganda about canola oil.  How many people checked to see if it was really used to make mustard gas as the propaganda sites claimed?  I saw this myth being repeated over and over but never saw even one person point out that mustard gas was a completely synthetic compound not made from any plants at all.  But the false propaganda kept growing because most people will not bother to verify claims.

here is a link that is talking about the
GMO Modified foods..
My doctor actually told me about this and then I started looking it up and said, .. Eeeegads .. it is getting harder and harder to get food that is not tainted with some short of garbage... I have been buying Organic seeds to plant for I know that you cannot replant the seeds from packages with out being organic for they do not grow well.. but this was an eye opener...

Feeding GMO corn to cattle requires the prophylactic use of antibiotics to prevent disease because cattle who eat GMO corn for more than 140 to 180 days BECOME VERY ILL AND DIE.

Any studies to back this claim up?  Not what some propaganda site claims, but actual studies.  I have a hard time believing this since soy is fed to cattle longer than that.  And since they are still eating the stuff after 180 days this means they are not dead.

Monsanto GMO corn contains an activated insect-killing bacterium called Bt Toxin. GMO corn engineered with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) produces its own built-in pesticide. Simply put, the Bt toxin is part of plant’s DNA and repeats itself in every cell. When bugs bite the plant, the poison splits open their stomach and kills them.

When humans eat food with Bt Toxin, the toxins remain in their colon, kidneys, liver and other vital organs.

Again any actual studies to back this claim for humans.  I cannot find any.

The Bt toxin used in GMO plants is a thousand times more concentrated than natural Bt spray. Studies confirm that even the less toxic Bt sprays are harmful. Unlike the spray, the gene spliced Bt toxin can’t be washed off. Bt toxin is designed to be more toxic and has the properties of an allergen.

Because the BT toxin is produced in the plant this does not mean it ends up in high concentrations in the corn itself.  It is like when they use colchicine to induce tetraploidy in watermelons.  The colchicine ends up in various parts of the plant, but not in the fruit itself.   So again, do you have any credible scientific studies to back your claims above?  The Bt toxin is found in the leaves of the plant that are not eaten, according to the study below, so again how much is actually in the corn itself?:

http://www.biology-online.org/articles/nitrogen_may_increase_bt.html

And according to this article by Greenpeace the levels of Bt toxin in the corn itself is considerably lower than the levels found in the rest of the plant:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:eZpbFLxEfVoJ:www.somloquesembr...

And how do you address the sites claiming just the opposite of what you are claiming:

http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/crops/00707.html

At an international meeting of entomologists in Basel, Switzerland, experts warned that Monsanto GMO Bt corn crops exude 10 to 20 times the amount of toxins than conventionally grown crops.

That is a pretty vague statement since there is no identification of what toxins are supposedly being secreted by either type of crop.

Don't get me wrong.  I am not for GMO either, but there is a difference between responsible reporting and inducing unnecessary hysteria.  So it would be nice to see these claism backed with some real evidence, not just what someone read on a propaganda site somewhere.
